I figured I'd try to give my perspective after watching the first few games...
We are shooting under 23% as a team from 3-pt range. 23%. Would have seen this coming, but I'm not concerned about it because I can't fathom any scenerio where we shoot below 30% for the season (if not way better). If we can increase this to 30-35% (still well below the 38% from last season and 42% from 2 years ago), we are getting an additional 5-8 points per game. Here are some ideas of how to do this taking into account that I don't expect JL to drastically alter our offense to become more of an interior team...in other words ways we can improve within JL's offensive system...
-Sammy is 4-24 from 3-pt range. He will improve upon this drastically upon this in the next several games and become a defensive focus for our opponents, which should open things up even more for the other guys who can shoot the long ball such as DD, DN, and TB. When AW gets back, we will force teams out of zone D which seems to be killing us thus far.
-I love the athleticism on this team, but am reminded of some players Mo had in the late 90's that all had ridiculous athleticism and potential but never lived up to expectations. However, if CR and TB can learn to dribble drive more effectively, they will get to the line creating easy points, and drive and dish to SM, DN, and DD for open 3-pointers...
-With AW out of the game, we need to establish a go-to scoring threat. Even if it means Theron taking 15-20 shots a game, I would love to see him in that role. Go-to guys command defensive attention in the which once again opens things up for other players. I think that is the role AW will play once he returns, but we need to establish someone in the mean time to open things up for the other players, especially on the perimeter. Remember how many open looks JJ Tauai got 2 years ago by being the 5th option on the floor? I'd like to see CR, WE, or DD get those kinds of looks.
-We are going to win today against Richmond IF our bench can score more than 15 points. If our bench is active, it means our starters can be spelled for more time and therefore can rest more. 3 days of tough games has to be exhausting. I think our urgency will be the best we've seen this season because JL knows this is going to be our toughest game in FL, and will have us ready to play. I may be the eternal optimist, but I think we'll all feel a little better about the team after today.
I don't usually create threads like this, but figured I'd try to stir up some discussion.
