Default AJ Youngman commits to ..

he has committed to Eastern Kentucky per reports that will be available soon

congrats to AJ - he has worked very hard to make himself into a DI shooter - some even doubted he'd play DI
..actually quite amazing that he was still that sought-after despite sitting out the whole AAU season nursing injury.

AJ Youngman tweets (6:48pm)
"I'm extremely blessed and proud to say that I have committed to play
basketball at Eastern Kentucky University!!"

Suppose he has a super season this year at Manual - and gets better offers - any chance he would flip ? EKS had a sub 500 season and the coach might not survive another one if the program is commited to winning -- Id say the same with Demonte Williams - Illinois coach is on the hot seat also

turtle, it happens...but two sides of the argument--
If he blows way up and Kentucky or Tom Izzo come calling, I think he has the right to change his mind as he has NOT signed a LOI and we all know verbal commitments by definition are not binding.
But in all probability, he knows what he wants, he'd have a chance to start from his freshman year and he wouldn't have had to commit now if it wasn't what he really wants.

We have seen that some very good kids - Dodie Dunson, Devan Bawkinel, Alex Foster, Peyton Allen, Donivine Stewart - all had changes of heart..

Turtle, I don't think Gross is on the hot seat with the recruiting class he's bringing in. He just got one of the top bigs in the Country in Tillman and he may well get maybe the best senior in ILLinois in Goodman from Bellville Altoff. Think he's pretty safe now.

I'd say based on past family practice of habitually searching for greener pastures I'd say that's definitely something I would be concerned about if I was EK.

I guess I am kinda surprised...
after several years that the local media has done lots of stories on AJ Youngman - he appears to be one of their favorite topics...mentioned in some article at least every week or so....

http://www.pjstar.com/sports/2016031...me-with-manual
(and this is just a partial listing - there are dozens more..)

despite that - AJ's commitment to Eastern Kentucky is arguably the BIGGEST story on his entire basketball career - and yet not a mention yet by the local media - not even a tweet several days after it is news everywhere else. Anyone know why?

The majority of the stories were about Manual games. He was a starter for Manual, so naturally he would be mentioned, along with the other Manual players.

did you click on the first two...
they are current or recent long feature articles about AJ Youngman and ONLY AJ Youngman....as are some of the others...

and many of those "game stories" have extra feature coverage of just AJ, his recruiting, his AAU plans, etc.......
like these - you just have to scroll down to read the part about AJ..

Can you name a Peoria area player in the last 5 years who has gotten any MORE coverage than AJ Youngman has?
I sure can't...so that's why I am kinda stunned that the biggest basketball news in his entire life just happened and the local coverage is out to lunch...
But we haven't had any decent high school coverage in several months! Something changed recently - layoffs maybe??
There were high school ALL STAR games in several sports - soccer, baseball, softball...and virtually zilch coverage - but they send about 10 people to cover track and bowling since they sponsor a track meet. Self-serving only..

If they spent 1/10th the amount of time & effort to cover local sports as they did to cover some obscure columnist shaving off his beard - then I'd be happy... ;

If you know me you know I'm not a fan of the urnal star, but if I see Reynolds I'll ask him why he mentions a Manual player named Youngman when he writes about a Manual game. He mentioned Youngman in the story about Boo, but he mentioned all the volunteers. I wished he would have committed to Bradley but he decided on somewhere else. Got over it though.

I know - but the team-articles aside, AJ still has more individual coverage over the past couple years than anyone...

I like AJ and am happy he's got a scholarship to play ball..
but our coaching staff doesn't have a whole lot of scholarships to give out over the next couple years so it doesn't surprise me we are offering very few...

as I pointed out - ISU has 20 or more offers out already for 2017 but we have only 4 or so....

With a lot of players that can play the 1 thru 3 positions, I hope to see a big man or two commit next year. I believe I have seen offers to a 6'7" player and two at 6'8". All have been listed as power forwards. However, in the valley the right 6'8" player could play the 5 position.

Most players sign NLIs before the season starts.

Most colleges do not send scouts to high school games where you are probably not going to see any D1 players outside of the player you are recruiting. They'd rather go to AAU events where they can see a large collection of D1 talent in a single setting. This is why you see a flurry of offers and commits in July, which is the most important month in terms of college recruiting.

Also, the high majors usually have a full class before the season starts. Players who sign in the spring are usually going to sign with low to mid majors.

AJ commited to EKU because he feels comfortable there and likes the coach and the setting. Anything can happen, like a coaching change, but other than that, I don't see why AJ would go somewhere else. It seems like a place where he can contribute and get solid minutes.

if some coach really wants him, then he will hear about it and back out of signing a LOI - but if he signs in November - then he's about 80-90% locked in unless he wavers and heads to juco or prep school.
Time will tell, but like you, I think he has made a very good choice...
EKU has won their conference & gone to the NCAA 3 times since 2005 - not bad...
They have played in other post-season tourneys 3 other times since 2010

they have good fans despite being overshadowed a lot by the other big in-state schools...and since AJ lived right there in Greenup County, KY when his dad was the basketball coach there (Greenup Co HS is a couple hours drive from EKU) & in Bardstown when his dad coached Nelson HS (that's only 1.5 hours away) - so he is likely very familiar with the area and has a better grasp on if or why he'd want to play there than any of us.
Who knows - it's also possible the family would or could move back down there where dad Jim Youngman has quite a good reputation for building high school programs and coaching success - it maybe be enough to lure him back into the coaching profession? Time will tell. I have met them, they are very good people, strongly family oriented and successful.

Now, about 24 hours after that statement - the PJS is advertising to hire a new "preps reporter"..

We have an opening for lead preps reporter at the Journal Star.
