Default 2017-18 MVC Basketball Preview

http://d1coachcorner.com/2017/August...redictions.htm

They have Bradley 4th - when was the last time we were picked in the upper half of the MVC? (I know this is an unofficial preview..)
(we were picked 5th in 2013 but did not do so well - also 5th in 2010 & 2008 - in 2007 we were picked #2)

They pick the Valley...
1- Missouri State
2- Loyola
3- UNI
4- BRADLEY
5- SIU
6- ISU
7- Evansville
8- Drake
9- Valparaiso
10- Indiana State

they also list a guy for Missouri State, Kabir Mohammed, who I had never heard of. He is not on their roster as they list it. - LINK
He is a guard (but was noted to have played the frontcourt) from San Jacinto junior college that was listed as a freshman on their 2016-17 roster (11 ppg, 8 rpg) so he might be a late add on from juco if he's a qualifier but more likely he is a 2018 recruit who won't join Missouri State until a year from now. He is a former Citadel commit out of high school who asked out of his signed LOI after a bizarre incident at the Citadel - LINK

Kabir Mohammed is a 2018 recruit from juco-

Indiana State finished tied for last place last season, and they are picked to finish 10th this year, but things just got worse for them.
According to Todd Golden, the beat writer for the Indiana State Sycamores, Laquarious Page, a starter and Indiana State's 3rd leading returning scorer, as well as their top returning 3-point shooter, will not be returning to the team for this upcoming season-
https://twitter.com/TribStarTodd/sta...73505231867904

Strange timing. He was just removed from the team's roster-
http://www.gosycamores.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball

Overall they did a pretty good job. However, there are a few other errors in the MVC preview in addition to the listing of Kabir Mohammed (a 2018 recruit) on the Missouri State team.
Here are a few of the obvious ones-
http://d1coachcorner.com/2017/August...redictions.htm

They predict SIU 5th, and list these players who are not returning from last seaso:
Off Roster:
Graduated: Sean O'Brien, Mike Rodriguez, Leo Vincent, and Tyler Smithpeters

However, Tyler Smithpeters, who redshirted a year, does return for one more season, and is listed on the 2017-18 SIU roster.
http://www.siusalukis.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball

They also list Solomon Hainna as a "key transfer" joining the Evansville team this season. However, he is not a new player. He joined the team last season, and played in 28 games for the Aces last year.

They show forward T.J. Thomas returning to Drake, but he was reported to have left the team early in the summer-
http://bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread...#post825131614

They show Antonio Pilipovic as one of Drake's returning players. However, he just committed in late June, 2017 and will be a true freshman. He was not at Drake last season.

And there are several new MVC players they completely omit.

He's been there three seasons plus all the summers so maybe he just got his grades and has finished his degree - so time will tell if he's going somewhere else.

And they list Ray Giacoletti as Drake's coach.

Edit: Looks like they have updated their page, adn Giacoletti is no longer listed as Drake's coach.

I saw one of the national gurus claiming that Missouri State is a lock to win and if they don't then there's something wrong.

Can someone fill me in on the "Northeastern Conference?" I've never heard of this league. Apparently, Valparaiso was a member before joining the Valley. Will all their games in the Horizon be vacated due to playing in the wrong league?

I didn't that part when I read the article, since I was only interested in what was said about each individual team.
Yeah, I wonder if Valpo knew they were playing in the wrong league.

Obviously just a major blunder that has not been corrected yet. Valparaiso has been a member of the Horizon League since 2007. From 1982-2007 they were a member of the forerunner of the Horizon League, The Association of Mid-Continent Universities, which changed their name to The Mid-Continent Conference in 2007. And prior to 1982, they were always Independent.

There is a conference named The Northeast Conference (previously known as the ECAC Metro Conference) made up of teams from New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. But Valpo was never associated with any of those schools.

Laquarious Paige will transfer to Lamar in Texas..
Paige is from Texas - so wonder if he completed enough courses this summer and can now be eligible immediately

Here's a preview that kinda got me laughing...
I guess anyone is entitled to their opinions no matter how silly but this one is silly

They pick Bradley #10! They have Drake at #5, ISU #4, Missouri State #3 then Valpo at #2 and Loyola #1
https://bustingbrackets.com/2017/10/...ower-rankings/

I suppose anything could happen but we return everyone while the five teams that also finished below .500 with us
(four of which were equal or worse in MVC record than we were) - all lose key players...

Default You're Right

The review is typical of someone writing without much knowledge of the league and what has happened. We certainly could reach at least 5 or higher in the league. Too bad someone is actually paid to do a review without knowing what they are talking about.

The MVC preseason poll and Preseason All-MVC teams will be announced soon.
Todd Golden, the beat writer for Indiana State posted his picks on his twitter account. He also tweeted comments about each team.
https://twitter.com/TribStarTodd/sta...00476713717760
https://twitter.com/TribStarTodd (scroll through for individual comments)

But for simplicity, here they are, and my comments in parentheses-
1 ) UNI
2 ) Missouri State
3 ) Loyola
4 ) SIU (I think maybe this is a little high for SIU)
5 ) Drake (really surprising he picks Drake this high)
6 ) Indiana State
7 ) Bradley (Bradley finished tied for 6th last year and returns almost all their scoring and rebounding, yet he puts them a slot lower)
8 ) Illinois State (wow, not much confidence in Dan Muller's coaching)
9 ) Valparaiso (this is lower than anyone else I've seen pick Valpo)
10) Evansville (this is a realistic pick)

MVC Player of the Year- Alize Johnson, Missouri State

Here are a couple more MVC beat writers' preseason picks-

From Todd Hefferman who follows SIU for The Southern Illinoisan. He picks Bradley 7th-
http://thesouthern.com/sports/colleg...fffb957ec.html

And Jim Benson, who follows Illinois State. He picks Bradley 8th-
https://twitter.com/Pg_Benson/status/918313563118333954

Again, for the record, Bradley finished last season tied for 6th place, and returns 94% of their scoring from last year. That is significantly more of their offense than any other MVC team. Bradley's top 9 scorers and their top 9 rebounders return, along with their top 10 players in minutes played.

On the other hand, almost every team picked ahead of Bradley by these MVC writers lost significant amounts of their scoring and rebounding along with All-Conference players:
UNI- lost All-MVC player Jeremy Morgan
ISU- lost All-MVC players Paris Lee, Deontae Hawkins, & MiKyle McIntosh
Loyola- lost All-MVC player Milton Doyle
SIU- lost All-MVC player Sean O'Brien
Evansville- lost All-MVC player Jaylon Brown, the top scorer in the MVC last year
Valparaiso- lost Horizon League Player of the Year Alec Peters, and All-Horizon player Shane Hammink, and lost 3 of their top 4 scorers

Interesting....Pat Hickey is the new Evansville beat writer, so he admits "I did plenty of homework so as not to completely embarrass myself but probably ended up doing so anyway".

Here are his picks for Preseason All-MVC-
1) Alize Johnson, Missouri State
2) Aundre Jackson, Loyola
3) Thik Bol, Southern Illinois
4) Phil Fayne, Illinois State
5) Tevonn Walker, Valparaiso

Surprisingly, of his top 5 players, only 1 is a guard- Tevonn Walker of Valparaiso, who averaged 11.9 ppg last year.

Tevonn Walker shoots a pretty low pct on both 3 pointers (29%. 29-100 for all games but just 28% in Horizon League games) and overall (42%, 39% in conference) and only 23 total asst in all of league play, while leading the team by a wide margin in fouls committed - but this year, unlike last year, he will draw the opponents' best defenders and be required to defend higher level athletes than he saw in the Horizon.

as a reminder to encourage everyone...
in 2007-08 EVERYONE had Drake either 9th or 10th!
But that year they blew everyone away, went 28-5 & 15-3 in the MVC
