Default North Carolina & academic fraud

The NCAA interest mostly centers on football but one of the UNC players, Julius Peppers (who's now with the Bears in the NFL)
also played basketball (under then HC Matt Doherty). There was reportedly rampant academic fraud and grade altering while Doherty and Peppers were there. Peppers was apparently allowed to play while he should have been ineligible.
http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/08/...be-may-be.html

Now, one of their academic advisors is cut loose
http://www.newsobserver.com/2012/08/...ector-for.html

..and Julius Peppers' transcript is now available - he got practically nothing but D's and F's - Matt Doherty still tweets that Peppers was one of the smartest players he ever had.
Wow - what does that say for the rest?

Meanwhile - NCAA goes hard after Arkansas-Pine Bluff for seemingly far lesser reasons...

Even more trouble popping up at North Carolina -- this whole story is nearing the "made-for-TV-level" ....
their top Athletic Department honcho in charge of FUND RAISING, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement & ex-UNC star quarterback Matt Kupec,
has suddenly resigned when it was revealed he took unapproved, university-paid trips with Tami Hansbrough
(Tyler Hansbrough's mom who also so-happens to have a job in the Athletic Department at UNC)
..and the two of them went to unauthorized places on the trips together....at least 20 private airplane trips together at University expense and many were clearly NOT for fundraising!

"he and university fundraiser Tami Hansbrough appear to have taken personal
trips at the university’s expense, Chancellor Holden Thorp said Monday...
..a review of his travel with Tami Hansbrough, the divorced mother of former
UNC star basketball player Tyler Hansbrough,
showed trips that did not appear to be university related.

Tami Hansbrough, a major gifts officer who earns $95,000 annually, has been
placed on administrative leave as that investigation continues.

The personnel changes give another twist to (Tami) Hansbrough’s unusual
work history at UNC-Chapel Hill. She was originally hired on Dec. 8, 2008, as
a fundraiser for the foundation that serves UNC-CH’s dental school.

At the time, her son Tyler, a senior, was beginning his final season on the
basketball team, a season that would bring the university a national
championship. Tyler Hansbrough was named an All-America and now plays in
the NBA.
Thorp confirmed that a dental foundation audit later found that during that
championship run, Tami Hansbrough had been traveling to cities in which
Tyler Hansbrough was playing basketball. But Thorp said those foundation-
paid trips were legitimate because she was raising money for the university,
and UNC fans traveling to those games would have been good candidates to
make donations."

This article even points out that Kupec invented this whole new token (possibly "phony") $95K position just to get Tami employed in his office and set the stage for this stuff!
http://www.dailytarheel.com/article/...purs-questions

Even worse - the University Chancellor & President seems to have known all about it for years and done nothing!
http://www.charlotteobserver.com/201...ith-since.html

Here's a picture of Tami

The article gets a bit steamier but you can read it yourself...and some are already citing that this obviously constitutes illegal benefits paid to the family of recruited athletes..

Oh my! This soap opera apparently will play on... Now, the UNC faculty has asked Thorp to stay as on chancellor.

you know what -- does it surprise anyone?? Power gets people thinking they can get away with anything....almost every place I have ever worked
or my wife has ever worked has had similar hanky-panky going on at the top level and everyone knew about it....but people clam up for fear of their jobs.
but obviously sooner or later people talk and you can't hide all the facts -- kinda reminds of an old saying...Num 32:23

Now some opinions coming from those who are conference foes of UNC are already calling on UNC to get on this case....
there are allegations that favorable or preferential treatment, free rides, a great job, getting to stay in the hotel with the AD, etc...were ALL obvious impermissible gifts and benefits given to the mother of one of UNC's KEY players...
and that all the wins and championships won while Tyler Hansbrough was on the team should be vacated...
Whattya wanna bet the NCAA still never even gives this case a sniff for fear of having to actually punish one of their favorite, storied programs - same goes with the Duke case.......

One more thing to add to the drama in Chapel Hill...

Roy Williams undergoes major surgery to remove a tumor from his kidney and may need another follow up surgery -- http://www.citizen-times.com/viewart...xt%7CFrontpage

Your initial link is a dead end - this may be the story you were referencing..
http://www.citizen-times.com/viewart...ms-has-surgery

I find it interesting that ...
Roy Williams currently has 675 victories at age 62, and after only 24 years of head coaching
(more than 28 wins per season on average! - perhaps the best wins-per-season average in D-I)

Currently the career D-I record is, of course held by Mike Krzyzewski at 927 wins in 37 years (25.1 wins per yr)-
Coach K will turn 65 this season (in Feb.) so - wonder how much longer he'll coach...but he if retires after he turns 70 and maintains the current averages - he'd finish with 1077 wins (43 seasons)

Coach K just passed Bob Knight's 902 (who retired just before his 68th birthday after 43 seasons/20.97 wins per yr)

If Roy stays healthy and let's say - coaches until he's 70, and maintains his average - he'd retire with 928 (927.75) wins
in 33 seasons. Should Roy keep working to match Coach K's & Coach Knight's 43 seasons then he'd finish with 1207!

Calhoun just retired with 873, but Jim Boeheim (if he can weather all the scandals) is also in the hunt for all time leader,
currently owning 890 winsin 36 seasons and he will turn 68 in a couple months.

Here is an interesting story from ESPN about the NCAA and new set of rules intended to improve the academics of college athletes.
The NCAA is phasing in new academic standards over the next 4 years, and if they are not changed, they will affect college sports dramatically. It is an interesting read.

Will these rules effect that change? Can you legislate academic preparedness? Or will these rules merely pull out the college rug from a large percentage of athletes?
The numbers suggest the latter. According to the NCAA's research, 43.1 percent of men's basketball players, 35.2 percent of football players and 15.3 percent of all student-athletes who enrolled as freshmen in 2009-10 to play Division I sports would not have met the 2016 standards.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/st...udent-athletes

I expect these changes will never be implemented the way they are written. They will do too much damage to the powerful BCS schools football and basketball programs.

interesting - the virtual absense of anyone covering that story is astounding...(search of ESPN, FoxSports, & Yahoo show none of them have this story)
that article from a Winston-Salem TV station is one of only a handful of news outlets that even report this story!
And yet - it is a felony assault, plus several misdemeanors, underage drinking, fake ID, fighting with officers, resisting arrest...

OMG -- when an incident that was one-tenth as serious as this happens at Bradley we have both the local press and
even uninformed national writers calling Bradley a "renegade program" and calling for the ouster of all involved from the coach on down.

So what is it....will someone fill me in??

A) is UNC (& Duke) suddenly committing violations, messing up, cheating, and having their players get arrested,
even tho much of the media still seems quite unwilling to talk much about it and nobody wants to hold anyone accountable?

B) or has this stuff actually been going on all along and been hidden/suppressed/ignored by the school, NCAA, and especially the media?

OK a WALK ON freshman punter! He'll be kicked off the team. Next! I'm not excusing the other things going on.

Also, the Tami Hansbrough sounds more like a convenient affair then anything sports wise. Executives of major corporations and government officials do this all the time. It's not excusable but I doubt that it benefited Tyler in the least. She is cute!

Ummm, this was an illegal and unethical use of NC state tax dollars, or funds raised from donors at the very least. There's a difference.
