Default BU recruit- Class of 2016 - Ben Coupet

Slightly older Bradley fans might remember Ben Coupet who played for Jim Molinari from 1994-1996. He was a 6'10" player from Chicago Simeon HS who never quite lived up to expectations at Bradley.

Now one of the best young phenoms in Chicago is a younger Ben Coupet, the son of the former BU player. He is a 6'5" 8th grader who is one of the best young players in Illinois for the class of 2016. He is planning on attending Simeon HS next year.

If I remember right Mo could never find him....(Big Ben)

I wonder how he(little Ben) chose his four favorite teams?

Those are probably the ones that are recruiting him the hardest and who have already hosted him for cookouts and barbecues at the coach's homes...

BTW -- did anyone know that his father Ben Coupet flirted with a Hollywood career...

The press and good pub on Ben Coupet, Jr. is starting to take off..
http://prospect-central.blogspot.com...-academys.html
http://thehoopdoctors.com/online2/20...ame-like-kobe/
http://ballislife.com/ben-coupet-jr-8th-grade-season/

almost every site compares him at his current stage to Kobe & MJ..
Maybe Ben Coupet's prediction back in '96 that he was going to be in the NBA ..was simply delayed by a generation...

it's still quite early in the high school basketball season and yet Chicago Simeon held an open scrimmage - kinda like a college-type Red-White - also described as a "Showcase" of all their talent....
......over 1300 people came to watch!! How many were at our Red-White?

it's being reported that 6-6 freshman Ben Coupet wowed everyone and will play a lot on varsity

Ben Coupet, Jr. - Son of ex-Brave Ben Coupet is impressing people and there are those who are likening him to Kobe -
he's already grown to 6-7 (he's a freshman) and plays like a guard (for Simeon)....but with the lineup Simeon has he isn't playing a lot of varsity right now

BTW Simeon coach Robert Smith as well as Morgan Park coach Nick Irvin are both suspended 4 games by CPL

Which reminds me of a story from where I worked then. At that time I was in charge of ordering merchandise for a small sports licensing chain in Central Illinois. I was in our store in the Northwoods Mall one night and in walks most of the Bradley basketball team. They were looking for a hat with only the NBA logo on it which we had in stock. We showed them the hat and everyone started laughing. Naturally I asked them why they wanted the hat. Their response was that the hat was for Ben Coupet as he was declaring for the NBA draft. My immediate and unfiltered response was; "YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME" which resulted in immediate laughter from everyone. They bought the hat and I am certain that they had some fun at the expense of Mr Coupet.

Is "reclassifying" the new "held back"? Seems like it is happening a lot. I have a couple buddies that were reclassified in the first grade.

sort of - but a little more thought goes into it..
a kid might want to reclassify if he's still developing and would be much more of a power by moving back a class- it sure worked for Mitch McGary - who rose from obscure/mid-major-caliber to Top 5 by doing an extra year of high school...
..also one class may be loaded with talent but the subsequent class - not so loaded - so a kid has a better chance of getting noticed by reclassifying..

BTW - every once in a while a kid reclassifies by moving up a year and graduating early - but usually this is disastrous - and the kid quickly finds out he isn't anywhere close to ready to play in college

2016 recruit Ben Coupet was a hot prospect back in 2014 and early 2015, but then he seemed to fall off the map. There are various reports of academic issues, but he also wasn't playing up to expectations.

Bradley's offer came way back in August, 2013 and was his first offer, but it was from Coach Ford, and is no longer a valid offer. The same is likely true of the DePaul offer that came in Sept., 2014.

I don't think he had any current offers until today, he received an offer from UNLV-
https://twitter.com/D1Circuit/status/728223145946193921

But there is speculation that this might be because new UNLV head coach Marvin Menzies is working to get a package deal with his Mac Irvin teammate Charlie Moore, the 2016 Illinois Mr. Basketball, who just decommitted from Memphis.

he also hired Rob Jeter as an assistant to recruit the midwest, and Long Beach State's assistant Eric Brown to cover the west coast.

but oddly several of the other 2016 kids Bradley had been targeting - are still uncommitted and some don't even seem to be getting any serious offers or interest..
several have gone to playing AAU this spring when the huge volume of AAU players are 15, 16, and 17 and these guys are a year or two older and essentially "playing down" hoping to get spotted.
Indianapolis Pike's Justin Thomas, Canadian Richardson Maitre, Daniel Soetan, Derrick Walker (who was a 4-Star ranked kid at one point)....
In time most of these kids will prob go prep or juco...

one other, who was in this category just a couple days ago has already done just that...

Montrell Dixson, a former BU recruit and cousin of UIC's Dikembe Dixson, and former teammate in Kentucky of AJ Youngman
... is now signed to play next year at Coffeyville Community College, in Coffeyville, KS
