Default Remarkable high school football achievement

with the serious lack of local football coverage, this accomplishment did not get much press.......

Peoria Central newcomer Geno Hess rushed 46 times for 445 yards according to PJS (but see below) on the ground and eight touchdowns in his very first game for the Lions..
and it definitely was NOT due to a weak opponent as they played Normal West, a far larger school.

Peoria Central scored 70 points to beat Normal West 70-63

btw- the Pantagraph's Jim Benson was there and independently had Hess for 574 yards, as did Jim Mattson....
and one other source had 579....so wonder what the real answer is...

70-63 is the 4th highest total score in IHSA FB history
and Hess' yardage is the 2nd highest rushing game in IHSA history
there were 58 points scored in the 4th quarter (also possibly a state record but not kept by IHSA)

you wonder why Geno Hess did not get more coverage...
The coverage he got in the Bloomington Pantagraph was more than in Peoria.

Jim Mattson reports that a review of game film gives these numbers for Geno Hess
.. 63 carries, 567 yards, 8 TDs
PJS musta been looking at halftime or 3rd quarter stats

AS you all know KW and DR are good friends of mine but I will have to say the coverage by the PJS leaves a lot to be desired. I realize KW & DR have nothing to do with how many people cover games. Upper management makes those calls. I must say we are getting ripped off for what the paper costs.

because of the dearth of local high school sports coverage, Geno Hess' achievement is getting as much coverage in the national press as local

I don't know any of the details, but sadly it is being reported former PJS writer Lonnie Schwindenhammer has passed away.
